CFS2 Airco DH2
Airco DH2
Introduced in 1916 and kept into service till 1917,
manufacturer; Aircraft Manufacturing Co. Ltd,
Airco DH2 proved to be an ideal stop gap response to the German Eindecker. As the British had not
deployed synchronised machine guns on their planes (despite having bought the rights to a system as early as 1913) this fighter was designed as a "pusher".
Powered by a Gnome Monosoupape 9 cylinder 100hp air cooled rotary engine, 1,200rpm
the plane proved to be agile yet underpowered, taking 12 minutes to reach 6,000ft. there was little or no throttle control, being either on or off.
Armament consisted of one 0.30cal lewis gun, originally swivel mounted, but as pilots found it hard to fly AND point the gun it was adapted
to be fixed and the aircraft itself aimed at the target.
