441 "Silver Fox" Squadron was formed in Canada as No. 125 (Fighter) Squadron on April 20, 1942. It was one of 6 Canadian home front squadrons transferred overseas in preparation for the invasion of Europe and was renumbered as No. 441 (Fighter) Squadron at Digby, Lincolnshire, on February 8, 1944. They flew Mk. V Spitfires briefly but began operations on Mark IX-B (LF.IX) Spitfires beginning in March. They flew fighter sweeps and defensive patrols, supported the D-Day landing on June 6, 1944, and subsequently provided close ground support in North-West Europe as part of the Second Tactical Air Force. The squadron converted to Mustang III aircraft in May in preparation for long range escort duties but VE Day arrived before they flew them operationally. 441 Squadron was disbanded at Molesworth, Huntingdonshire on August 7, 1945.
