By 1944, the Luftwaffe High Command had realized that thier most effective bomber killer was the FW-190, but it lacked performance to defend itself against escorting fighters. It was decided that each Jagerschwader of Me 109s equipted with the G-10 (the fastest 109 of them all) should each form one Staffel of special escorts to escort the FWs when they were attacking the bombers
